I'll just say it, my kids are spoiled. My kids have never lived in anything but a 3bedroom house, while I spent my ENTIRE childhood living in an apartment with my mother and grandmother. It's true - I did not live in a house until the hubby and I bought our first one in 2002, about a year before Grace was born. And yet, little miss G announced to me the other day "when she grows up she's going to live in a BIG house". Really? I launched into a small speech about being content with what God has given us, etc, but in truth, I myself have thought our house was too small, and I'm guilty of this attitude trickling down to my children. So in an effort to create space where there is none, I present the Spring 2009 project in our household... the garage!! We have a shed in our backyard, so I'm proposing to the hubby that we move all the junk out and allow a Playroom to move in! So here we go folks, I need your best ideas for a garage / playroom makeover. Should I install shelving? Put down some carpet scraps so that it can be used with the garage door closed on rainy days, but open on sunny days? Paint the walls for some added kick? Post any links or suggestions in the comments and I will be forever grateful! And in the process I hope to teach my children that we can think creatively, be content and THANKFUL (cuz you can say you are content, but still grumble when no one is around), and make our house into more of a home for play... even if it starts with a simple garage playroom!

I'd love to help, but I really stink at home decor. This sounds like a great idea - for where you live, that is. Last night I left my half-cup of cocoa in the van and this morning it was frozen solid. Obviously, I spend as little time in my garage as possible...
I love this idea. Slap some paint on the wall and through down a rug. I bet you can find some great shelves or kid table/chair sets on craigs list.
ooh - you know how I love projects like this! A good start is budget - Monique's advise would be the quickest, cheapest option, or you can go a few step further and do what model homes do and add french doors, and portable ac/heat units. Depends on whether this will be a Terry or Christina project.

Check out that link. That is what you should do with your garage.
Great idea! I think hours of fun a day will follow! I bet you could find carpet remnants on craigslist too. I'd definitely paint - a blue perhaps? That way when it isn't a playroom one day you wouldn't have to repaint - unless you want a pink garage forever. :) You could hang a chalkboard too - I had a playroom in our garage growing up and I loved playing school! Go figure.
Cool Idea! BTW, your posts always make me smile! Some ideas for garage: only carpet half the floor, leave other half to park riding toys (you could paint their own parking spaces with their names!) and chalk drawing! Hang pegboard that the girls paint themselves to hang all hangable toys on. Also, make a movie theatre! We did this temporarily. You wouldn't even have to move all your stuff from the garage, just hide it behind the "movie screen". Just go to Wal-mart or Goodwill, pick up cheap white sheets, plus two twin size black sheets. Figure how many and what sizes according to where you want to hang them. Hang wire horizontally attached to rafters to hang the sheets from. Hang the black sheets on either side of a white sheet, kinda like a movie theatre. If you have access to a movie projector and computer, viola, movie theater. When all the summer outside string lights come out, let the girls pick one each and hang them in the garage! Just a few ideas! Have fun!
